Verdi: Rigoletto Blu-ray (The Royal Opera) 2021

Verdi's Rigoletto 2021 production by Oliver Mears on Blu-ray. Rigoletto is the story of the cynical jester to the scandalous womaniser, the Duke of Mantua. When the Duke decides to entice Rigoletto's daughter Gilda, the jester realises he cannot protect her. This propels a story of deception, vitriol and the agony of love.

This 'thrilling new production' (The Times) by director Oliver Mears marks his Royal Opera debut and adds a fresh new layer to Verdi's morality play narrative, drawing on ideas of a corrupted and socially decaying modern world. With Antonio Pappano's conducting, a superb cast compels audiences: Carlos Alvarez in the title role, Lisette Oropesa as a 'matchless Gilda' (The Guardian) and tenor Liparit Avetisyan as the Duke of Mantua.

Brilliant production of a classic Verdi opera

I found the Rigoletto from ROH a very engaging contemporary production with excellent principal singers. A review in the Opera News magazine piqued my interest to see one of my favorite sopranos, Lisette Oropesa, sing Gilda and she beautifully inhabited the character while singing exquisitely. In addition, Carlos Alvarez is one of the few great Verdi baritones currently singing and he turned in an exemplary performance. A bonus was the chance to see a tenor new to me with Liparit Avetisyan playing the duke. And, as usual, Sir Antonio Pappano conducted with his firm command of Verdi's style and a spirited pacing of the opera. The pacing did not drag yet also was not rushed, allowing the singers their full expression.
