Woolf Works Blu-ray (The Royal Ballet)

Notify me when this product is available:

Woolf Works (2015), now available in Blu-ray, was Wayne McGregor's first full-length piece for The Royal Ballet and saw the return to the Royal Opera House Main Stage of the former Royal Ballet Principal dancer Alessandra Ferri. Resembling the synaesthetic relationship between form and substance in Virginia Woolf's writings, each of the three acts is not only rooted from her letters, essays and diaries, but in one of Woolf's prominent novels: Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves.

Expressing the artistic drive to discover a liberated and modern reality, Woolf Works focuses on Woolf's world of 'granite and rainbow' in which humans are at once both physical entities and uncontained essences.

Reviews

"[Woolf Works] takes both McGregor – and the concept of the three-act ballet – to a brave and entirely exhilarating new place." The Guardian

"a compellingly moving experience" The Observer

"McGregor sticks to a restrained classical vocabulary, creating tender, lyrical dances that evoke the giddiness of youthful love, and, later, the anguish of mental pain" New York Times

"Ferri is a commanding presence. With dark eyes and a pliant body, she flows through McGregor’s steps, winding and folding into soft lines. Looking at Beatriz Stix-Brunell, who plays her past self, Ferri manages to show emotion both felt and remembered." The Independent
