The much-loved story of Cinderella has captured hearts and minds for centuries and this historic colour recording from 1969, full of dreams and magic, shows why. Infused with the drama of Prokofiev’s luscious score, the tale of transformation provided creative inspiration for Frederick Ashton’s acclaimed first full-length ballet. His enchanting production stands as a showcase of choreographic mastery and features one of The Royal Ballet’s most celebrated partnerships with Antoinette Sibley as Cinderella and Anthony Dowell as the Prince. Ashton’s distinctive theatricality is also revealed in his legendary cameo as one of the Ugly Sisters opposite Robert Helpmann.

A Magical Treasure

This vintage recording from 1969 of the first full length ballet by a British choreographer is a joy from start to finish. Not only do Ashton, Helpmann and Grant reprise the roles they created at the ballet’s premier, but Sibley and Dowell, whose partnership was second in prestige only to that of Fonteyn and Nureyev, give luminous performances as the enchanted couple. The ROH musicians under John Lanchberry give a faultless account of the scintillating score. A happy reminder of an earlier golden age of this world class company.

Cinderella DVD (The Royal Ballet) 1969

The DVD is delightful and very beautiful. The dancing, the sets and the costumes are enchanting. I loved the humour of the ugly sisters. A very special performance.
