Mozart: Die Zauberflöte Blu-ray (The Royal Opera) 2017

Prince Tamino (Mauro Peter) promises the Queen of the Night (Sabine Devieilhe) that he will rescue her daughter Pamina (Siobhan Stagg) from the enchanter Sarastro. He begins his quest, accompanied by the bird-catcher Papageno (Roderick Williams) – but all is not as it seems…

David McVicar’s classic production embraces both the seriousness and comedy of Mozart’s work. The audience is transported to a fantastical world of dancing animals, flying machines and dazzlingly starry skies. The setting provides a wonderful backdrop for Mozart’s kaleidoscopic score, from the Queen of the Night’s coloratura fireworks to Tamino and Pamina’s lyrical love duets and Papageno’s hearty, folksong-like arias.

This has made my daughter SO happy, you’ve no idea!

My daughter (who is autistic with serious physical disabilities/illnesses & rarely leaves home, except for hospital appointments) saw this performance on YouTube via your YouTube channel & she totally fell in love with it, but was very upset when the video got deleted & she couldn’t find that exact same performance anywhere again. As Rachel is autistic, she was fixated on this exact one & she wasn’t comfortable with any other version. After almost a full year of searching, she finally found this blu-ray version; the very same one she’d watched on YouTube & she begged me to get it for her birthday, even though we don’t actually have a blu-ray player. Rachel rarely ever asks for anything & she’s such a sweet girl (a childlike mind within the body of an adult), despite her sad circumstances in life, so I didn’t have the heart to say no. As soon as it was ordered & paid for, the way her face lit up with pure joy & excitement made me feel so glad I could make at least one of her wishes come true. She’s been searching online for the best blu-ray player since the order was placed, but my Rachel deserves the best & I have one more surprise for her; a PS5, which I’ve been told she can play blu-ray disks on. I can’t wait to see how she reacts, as I know she enjoys playing games as well & now she’ll have a good selection to choose from, but now we also have the option of buying blu-ray films. So thank you very much, Royal Opera House. You’ve truly given my Rachel a birthday to remember!
