Firebird Tutu Greeting Card

Our Firebird Tutu Greeting card features a close up of the tutu worn by Margot Fonteyn in the Sadler's Wells Ballet production of The Firebird (worn in 1954). It was designed by Natalia Goncharova and photographed by Hugh McDermott. © Royal Opera House Collections. See our full Greeting Cards collection here

An image of the full tutu is on the back of the card and includes a description of what goes into making a tutu and the materials used:

Tutu with a boned bodice of red rayon grosgrain decorated with feather-shaped lines of gold cord and hand-painted with a darker red. The central V-panel of the bodice is decorated with appliqued gold and white crin hand-painted with purple. At two points on the neckline are plumes of thin red ostrich feathers. The skirt has under-layers of tarlatan graduating from pale pink to bight pink. The top layer of the skirt is made of flame-shaped tongues of yellow, orange and red rayon grosgrain each edged in gold thread, and tongues of gold and white crin. The skirt is also decorated with red feathers, and peices of frayed red and yellow silk.
