Learn to cut, stitch and decorate a high-quality bespoke classical ballet tutu
Making Tutus is a practical guide to making traditional costumes for classical ballet dancers. As with the tutu itself, the book approaches the task in three parts – the tutu plate, the bodice and the decorative sections. It shares the secrets of a leading costume-maker as it explains the challenging task of, on the one hand, creating a light and beautiful ballet outfit suitable for performance and, on the other, making a comfortable and hardwearing costume that suits a character. In doing so, it reveals the extraordinary talent and techniques required by the costume-maker.
DESIGN - key decisions on the type of tutu plate (pancake vs drop), fabric and decoration
PATTERNS - basque, knickers, bodice and tutu plate recipes in three different sizes
INSTRUCTIONS - detailed step by step sequences explain the process from making the calico toile through to final decoration and fitting
PRACTICAL ADVICE - from pleating the nets to assembling the base, essential tricks of the trade are shared and troubleshooting tips are given

Always excellent service
I recently stumbled across this incredible book. It is packed with the most amazing information. ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS! It is both captivating and informative. So easy to follow. I hope there is another book on the way!
Amanda Hall’s book, Making Tutus, is an excellent resource addition. It’s very thorough from beginning to end without being overwhelming. The instructions are clear detailed easy to follow step by step explanations of the tutu making process reinforced with photographs and leaving flexibility in choosing one’s personal preferences throughout construction. It has filled in the gaps missing from other tutu instructions that I have acquired. I bought it before I had access to purchasing it in the US. It has become my go to book, my tutu bible.
I bought 16 of these for a tutu making conference I am hosting. It will be a fabulous gift for the attendees. If you are fascinated by costume construction, you’ll love the specific details in this book.
Many photographs help to understand all steps.
