Woolf Works DVD (The Royal Ballet)

The Woolf Works DVD from 2015 was Wayne McGregor's first full-length work for The Royal Ballet and saw the return to the Covent Garden Main Stage of former Royal Ballet Principal dancer Alessandra Ferri.

Each of the acts inspired by one of Virginia Woolf's landmark novels - Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves - and her letters, essays and diaries, Woolf Works journeys through the heart of an artist who's driven to explore modern realism. It puts Woolf's world of 'granite and rainbow' to light reminding us that a person is both a physical body and an uncontained essence.

Reviews

"[Woolf Works] takes both McGregor – and the concept of the three-act ballet – to a brave and entirely exhilarating new place." The Guardian

"a compellingly moving experience" The Observer

"McGregor sticks to a restrained classical vocabulary, creating tender, lyrical dances that evoke the giddiness of youthful love, and, later, the anguish of mental pain" New York Times

"Ferri is a commanding presence. With dark eyes and a pliant body, she flows through McGregor’s steps, winding and folding into soft lines. Looking at Beatriz Stix-Brunell, who plays her past self, Ferri manages to show emotion both felt and remembered." The Independent
