Two Gentlemen of Verona DVD (RSC)

Valentine is leaving Verona to seek adventure in Milan. Proteus, his best friend, wants to remain at home because he is madly in love with Julia. However, his father sends him to join Valentine. In Milan, Valentine has fallen for Silvia, the Duke of Milan’s daughter, and plans to elope with her. When Proteus sees Silvia, he too falls in love with her, despite his feelings for Julia. Proteus then betrays his friend to the Duke, who banishes Valentine. In the wilderness, Valentine encounters a band of outlaws and is elected their leader. Meanwhile, Julia, disguised as a man, is searching for Proteus, and overhears him declaring love to Silvia. Heartbroken, she joins his service in an attempt to thwart his new infatuation. Silvia flees the court, pursued by Proteus, Julia and the Duke. She is captured by the outlaws but rescued by Proteus, who then tries to force himself on her. Valentine intervenes and Proteus is forced to confront his actions. Julia reveals her identity, prompting Proteus to remember his feelings for her. Reconciliation begins.

‘There's a lovely summery feel to Simon Godwin’s nimble-footed modern-dress production of this early Shakespeare comedy; it’s a stylish and confident RSC debut.’ – Evening Standard
