Francesco Cilea's intoxicating opera is brought to new life on the Royal Opera House stage after a century's absence. Director David McVicar's interpretation for The Royal Opera of this neglected masterpiece recreates the Comédie-Française in its heyday, the early 18th century. As the drama heightens, the lovers – sung by Angela Gheorghiu and Jonas Kaufmann – are irreversibly bound into a mêlée of passion. The jealousy and revenge that surround them can only lead to heartbreak and tragedy.
