An early comic opera from Wagner, Das Liebesverbot, brings joy and energy to his repertoire. Based on Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, the Spanish debut is available in Blu-ray with a production by director Kasper Holten for Teatro Real.
The score is energetic and boasts Italian, French and Weberian influences from Wagner's early career. The youthful energy is accompanied by the always delightful musical genius. The adaption of the Bard's play is clear in its rebellious attitude, reflecting Revolutionary Germany where sensual love gets it vindication but fanatical repression of sexual expression by authorities is attacked.
Ivor Bolton is conducting an equally energetic and dynamic cast that features the English baritone and Cardiff Singer of the World Lieder Prize-winner Christopher Maltman, Turkish-Viennese tenor and BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Ilker Arcayürek and Germany’s hottest Wagnerian leading lady, Manuela Uhl.
