Manon

I'll be honest. Manon by the author l'Abbé Prévost is not my favorite novel, but as a ballet, it's in my Top 5. The story is complicated about a time when the rich bought the services of the poor by exploiting them shamefully, and when they rebelled, they were thrown into prison or exiled to faraway lands. This ballet tells the story of this class struggle, a story of love, desire, prostitution, fidelity and the instinct to survive. Tamara Rojo is the perfect prima ballerina for this role and Carlos Acosta, her lover in the story, steps aside to pay tribute to Rojo's talent. Despite the sad ending, what a sublime ballet!
