Coppelia Blu-ray (The Royal Ballet) 2019

A classic returns to the Royal Ballet repertory with Ninette de Valois' charming and funny Coppélia - a story of love, mischief and mechanical dolls. The intricate choreography is set to Delibes' delightful score and shows off the technical precision and comedic timing of the whole Company. With Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov in the lead roles and the incomparable Gary Avis as the put-upon Doctor Coppélius, this is a treat for all lovers of traditional ballet.

On Núñez: "Every shrug, every pout, every stamp of the foot is a masterclass in verismo and she renders the most complex mime passages instantly intelligible." The Financial Times

"Muntagirov showed unsuspected comic flair as Franz... His double-take on first spotting Coppélia earned a big laugh while his airborne Act Three variations won gasps and giggles of delight." The Financial Times

Toujours impeccables!

Coppélia

I have five productions of Coppélia in my collection and The Royal Ballet's recent offering is the best of the lot. It's a great story, very funny, and the music is delightful. It was just a given that Marianela Nunez and Vadim Muntagirov were going to be brilliant, but Gary Avis had more fun playing Dr. Coppelius than humans ought to be allowed to have. The whole production was simply outstanding and will repay multiple watchings. Don't miss this one!!
